Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother and her godparents. Her father left her family. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder that was rooted in words as a young toddler. Ford was first attracted to acting as a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a month, she decided that it wasn't suitable for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get a place on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of Ford's classmates. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut on Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1990. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such programs on television like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. The stage was her main focus as well as a part of the company's 2000-2001 season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedy, that were added to her show in the year 1996.
