Audra McDonald is unparalleled in the breadth and versatility of her talent as a singer and an actor. Audra McDonald who has won Six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was recognized as one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People. President Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -- America's highest honour to recognize achievements in the field. She is equally at home in television, film and Broadway. Her luminous soprano makes her a natural on the stage. Alongside her stage work, McDonald has built a career that includes a significant concert and record-making career. She frequently performs in the most prestigious venues. McDonald was born in Fresno California to a music family, received her training in classical singing at New York's Juilliard School. In 1994, just a few years following her graduation from Juilliard School, McDonald won the Tony Award for "Best Performance of a Leading Actress Musical" for Carousel. In the following four years, she won two more Tony Awards in the featured actress category for her performance of the Broadway premier of Terrence McNally's play Master Class (1996) and his musical Ragtime (1998) which gave her the record-breaking total of three Tony Awards before the age of 30. In 2004, she took home her fourth Tony for her role in A Raisin in the Sun along with Sean Diddy Combs. Then in 2013, she brought her fifth Tony in addition to her first award in the Leading actress category. As the Tony Awards' most decorated performer, she was able to set Broadway history when she received her sixth Tony Award playing Billie Holiday as Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill. This performance also served as the basis to make the Olivier Award nominee 2017 London West End debut. First actor awarded in four different acting categories, McDonald beat the record in the number of awards an actor has won. The credits she has in the theater includes The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (993) Henry IV (2004) and 110 in the Shade (707). Twelfth Night was McDonald's Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut. Shuffle Along is the Making of the Musical Seduction of 1921, and All That Followed. Frankie Johnny in the Clair de Lune. and Ohio State Murders. McDonald was introduced to the public via television for her dramatic performance in Peabody Award winning CBS's Having Our Say the Delany Sisters first 100 years. In 1999, she co-starred with Kathy Bates and Victor Garber on the ABC/Disney television version of Annie. Then, in 2000, she appeared as a recurring on NBC's popular show Law & Order Special Victims Unit. Following her debut Emmy nomination in recognition of her performance on the HBO film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit produced by Mike Nichols and starring Emma Thompson McDonald returned to network television in 2003 on the political drama Mister Sterling, produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. and featuring Josh Brolin. Then, in the year 2006, McDonald appeared on WB's The Bedford Diaries. The next year, she appeared as an actor who appeared on NBC's Kidnapped. McDonald received the fourth Emmy nomination for her part in HBO's special film of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill in 2016. The Bite will be a six-episode series about a epidemic co-produced by Spectrum Originals, CBS Studios and Taylor Schilling in 2021. McDonald was U.S. prosecutor Liz Lawrence, a character she first played on the CBS drama The Good Wife legal drama in the year 2009. The role was reprised in 2018, as an episode regular Liz Reddick in Paramount+'s The Good Fight. For her role, McDonald received three Critics Choice Award nominations. She guest stars as a guest star in Julian Fellowes historical drama The Gilded Age.
